About this deal

I've found through trial and error that this works in familiarizing my students thoroughly with the guitar and keeps them motivated at the same time. The structure of the lessons is good, it varies between guitar technical stuff and theory as you progress, meaning that you won't get bored of any single topic, and you'll have a chance to try out the theoretical bits one step at a time. It's a shame they never made newer editions of this book with more graphics and supplemental audio-video tools.

If a beginner book doesn't cover these subjects, then it will leave gaps in your knowledge, or not offer enough motivation to keep on practicing.

Top 10 Guitar Books For Beginners #2 – ‘Teach Yourself Visually Guitar’ by Charles Kim

If you are interested, and you want to learn how to play guitar you have to know the strings and each element that conforms it to make its use easier. You must learn to tune the guitar, to know how to clean it, or how to change the strings, because it is also very important when playing guitar. Whether you want to be the next Frank Zappa or Misha Mansoor, you’ll have to start with a strong foundation of the basics and gradually work your way to the top. Guitar books can be a great reference or instructional resource to help you achieve your goals (we also have a guide on how to read tab if you need it).

With your biased & strong opinions (like books should be banned), you don’t seem to respect other students’ choice for alternative learning. Four of the guitar books for beginners in this article contain excellent reference materials, so you can look things up as you need them, and they can also help you structure your practice.

Top 10 Guitar Books For Beginners #1 – ‘Hal Leonard Guitar Method’ by Will Schmid and Greg Koch

When assessing guitar books for beginners, we like to think in practical terms and in this regard this book would be most useful. We recommend this as a must-have resource not just for learning the guitar, but also as an almanac of information about guitarists, styles, equipment, and a chord library. While the old version (1 st Edition) is great, this new version has been updated to reflect the changes in technology in the past two decades, and we think that the updates have made a big difference. I might be just a teeny tiny bit biased here – this was my first ever guitar book, and I pretty much taught myself using this book. That’s why, let me tell you from personal experience, that this is one of the best guitar instructional books of all time! Mnemonics are a tool that far too few guitarists use but everyone can benefit from. A book having mnemonics can make it super simple for you to memorize your fret board. As I began to learn music theory on the internet, I found that the material that I was learning just wasn’t going deep enough. In this book, I found detailed explanations of chords, diatonic harmonies, chord construction, melodies, and rhythms. I wanted to learn more and I wanted to proficient when I was done learning.

The Hal Leonard method has been around for years, and it is one of the most popular guitar books for beginners. Any musician in any of your future bands will tell you that rhythm is the most important thing, and the ‘Idiot’s Guides: Playing Guitar’ has you covered. It is emphasized early and often. This book isn't specifically for beginner guitar players, as it isn't a coursebook. Nevertheless, it makes for a great supplementary book to a beginner's guitar studies. There is no accompanying audio, but the book itself is written in tablature, so once you can read tablature, it is easy for a guitar beginner to use. There is also a DVD that is available. If you’re an intermediate guitarist looking to expand your knowledge, an advanced guitarist that’s not had formal training, or a beginner who wants to have a book that they can use as they grow, I would really suggest this book. It’s really interesting too, because this book also has snippets of advice from famous guitarists.

MORE CHAPTERS IN THIS GUIDE

It focuses on acoustic guitar, so those of you who want to learn the electric will need to keep looking. Reading through the Guitar for Dummies book, it is apparent that unlike the Teach Yourself to Play Guitar book above, this one is not meant solely for beginners. It has lots of info and theory, that would be useful for the intermediate-level guitarist.Beyond teaching the basics, this book goes into the particulars of different genres as well. During my 15+ years of teaching private students, I've developed a very specific program that I teach to people who are new to the guitar. This is a technique of memory learning that involves taking stories, phrases, and acronyms and using them to remember important pieces of information. The Hal Leonard Guitar Method uses a longstanding and thoroughly vetted guitar curriculum, and many guitar instructors still swear by this book and have their students follow the method.
